Marshall is devastated over losing Lily and goes into a depression that the gang tries to help him get over. Barney, in all his glory, wants to bring Sunshine into his life. Note I wrote Sunshine. This is Barney we’re talking about here; of course he brings Marshall to a strip club. Ted tries to initially not tell Marshall about him and Robin getting together but Barney could tell they were together and is dismayed because he was so excited they’d all be single together. Nothing the gang does seem to help Marshall.

Then Marshall receives a credit card statement, Lily’s statement. Ted takes it away, rips it up and throws it immediately out, taking the garbage with him. But Marshall gets it back and assumes that Lily is dating George Clinton (a hilarious cameo). Barney accidentally tells Marshall that he needs to go online to access the latest credit card info. He finds out that she’s back in NYC and staying at a hotel. The gang can’t keep Marshall in control and he goes to the hotel to find her. He knocks on the door and some guy answers. Marshall’s response: PUNCH.

Ted returns from his almost weekend away with Robin to comfort Marshall and find him at the hotel bar. Marshall informs Ted that someone had stolen Lily’s credit card. We see a flashback on how that happened, with Lily in SF annoying a bunch of customers in line for coffee. After 67 days of moping around, drinking leftover dinner beer and hanging around the apartment in his boxers, Marshall finally gets over Lily and makes pancakes for Sunday Pancake Day.

At the end, we see Marshall, Ted, Robin and Barney, all joking around at the bar. Then the camera looks past the foursome to the window to a newly-brunette Lily who is attempting and backing out of going into the bar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next week:
Episode 2.02 - The Scorpion and the Toad:
Barney teaches Marshall how to pick up women. When things start to go sour for an awkward Marshall, Barney steps in and wins the women over... for himself. Meanwhile, Lily is back from her art experience. While helping her look for a new apartment, Robin gets sick of hearing about Lily's amazing summer in San Francisco.
Tonight’s options are:
8:00PM ABC Family “Wildfire” [new]
8:30PM CBS “How I Met Your Mother” [new]
9:00PM WB “Related” [new]
9:00PM ABC Family “Beautiful People” [new; return]
10:00PM MTV “Real World/Road Rules Challenge [new]
Last night's viewings were incredible. Like, major. Like, I have all the DVDs, I put alerts out for myself when new ones will be coming out, I read all articles, watch all the characters’ movies, know a little trivia [Did you know that Sean Gunn’s (Kirk) brother is married to Jenna Fischer (Pam on “The Office”)?], etc etc. I’m also very opinionated. Plus, I like my Girls happy (or at least upset for the greater good of the storyline). Let me just say SPOILER ALERT now for those who do not want to know anything coming up. Are we good? Good.
One character grates my nerves. I mean, I can not stand to read fans’ comments on bringing this particular character back. I mean, it makes me furious which is saying a lot because, although I love my TV, I would hope I’m not invested in it THAT much. I wouldn’t letter write to complain, picket outside the studio, give up on the show or anything. It’s just, for me, the constant “Bring Jess back” is like nails on a chalkboard.
I have yet to read a comment or critique that would make me understand what I will call “The Jess Phenomenon”. To me, he was inconsiderate jerk who never deserved our little Rory. So, why does a good percentage of the GG audience love him? If it’s just because he’s cute, I will scream. Yeah, yeah, alright. I’ll give you the satisfaction that he is a mildly good looking guy, that Milo. And I have no qualms at all that Alexis and Milo are dating in real life. That I think is completely fine. For the audience to be enamored of the Rory/Jess relationship irks me to no end.
Having him pop up every year is completely stupid. AS-P, I’ll give you the benefit of Jess’ return earlier this season in waking Rory up to go back to school but I know you could’ve done it in other ways. Bringing Jess back again in April, however, better be good.
Alright, let me try to state my case a bit better. When Jess first appeared, I thought it would be a good thing for Luke. Luke needed his own family. We needed to learn more behind the blue baseball cap. As the tormentor of everyone in Stars Hollow, Jess showed no redeemable qualities. Trying to steal someone’s girlfriend is another unsavory quality. Liking to read, having the same taste in music does not make a great couple. Although Dean wasn’t always the sharpest tool in the shed, he tried. He got his grades up, he believed in Rory and he voiced his feelings and opinions. Jess, on the other hand, quibbled, distracted, steered Rory on the wrong path (literally…he got her injured) and grunted, not even that sometimes.
Jess would tell Rory he would call later and instead of telling her he wasn’t able to make plans, he would say nothing and would assume she would sit at home waiting for him. He didn’t tell Rory about dropping out of school and what makes him the best boyfriend, he gets on a bus and leaves without a word. I’m sorry; this is awesome behavior for a person that is supposedly in love with another person? This is the person I should believe is perfect for Rory? No, Rory yelling at the phone after receiving several calls on graduation day was totally valid. I am so proud of that moment for her.
He keeps popping in and out of her life. He left several times and came back and she should wait for him? For someone that treats her like that? No. Yes, I’ll give AS-P credit for finally redeeming him during his last visit to Connecticut. But, Rory didn’t need to see him; he could’ve called Luke and let him know what he was up to. Or, here’s an idea: his mother.
So, what do I expect for his next visit? Well, first off, he’s not in Connecticut. Yeah! Luke chaperones April on a school trip to Philadelphia. He checks up on Jess, so there should be some snarky remarks regarding Luke having an unknown child and Jess having a cousin. I also heard rumblings that Rory was going to go down to Philadelphia. If so, I will be really upset if she goes to see him. She doesn’t need him. He doesn’t deserve her.
In last night’s episode “Bridesmaids Revisited”, Rory discovered that Logan “cheated”. Well, in the “Friends”-like moment, they were on a break. It is reprehensible what he did, yes. But, he matches wit, brains, pop culture references, etc with Rory. I’m not even talking about Logan being from Rory’s grandparents’ world. They click a lot better than the relationship with Jess.
Matt Czuchry has signed on for about 12 episodes for next season. So he is going to be around for much longer. Milo, on the other hand, can barely get his pilots to air. His new show, “Bedford Diaries” will not have a second season, already! Now, I’m not saying it is his fault. He’s already attached to another pilot for 2006 – 2007, but let him move on. Let Alexis’ character move on. Rory deserves better than that schmuck with an attitude, Jess. There are thousands of girls in Philadelphia, get with one of them. Aight? Aight.
---
On another note: ZACH PROPOSED TO LANE!! Granted, AS-P wrote the episode and it was filmed awhile ago, but I think she heard my inner rumblings. For that, THANK YOU AMY!!
Today is Tuesday February 28 and there is some fantastic new episodes on tonight:
8:00PM The WB "Gilmore Girls" MUST SEE! From what I have heard, I won’t need to because she will be added to the cast for next year. Autumn Reeser plays Taylor Townsend on Fox’s “The O.C.”. Feisty, by-the-book yet a little off her rocker, Taylor is the perfect complement to Rachel Bilson’s increasingly more responsible and less outrageous (than previous seasons) Summer Roberts. So, congratulations Autumn!!
Now, here’s a question: what is with the revolving door of new characters in Newport? As soon as they bring someone around and then have them leave, the next episode has a brand new character. Recently, the ever-annoying, always “Marissa, love me…” Johnny Harper died and they implanted his cousin Sadie. Um…why would Johnny’s aunt think it’s a good idea to send her daughter to help console her sister rather than herself? I just don’t think that’s logical. “Oh, you’re sad about your son? Well, let me send you my daughter, you know, the one that was wicked close to your son and will constantly remind you that your son is not around and will bring his friends over all the time so you can still be constantly reminded that Johnny is dead.”
I am thankful that this will put a damper on the Ryan-Marissa relationship because they really have a crappy relationship. They never seem to be truly happy together. They SAY they are but they don’t show it. With Summer and Seth, Summer may be upset at Seth a lot but at least you see the moments when she cares for him. Marissa seems to be more in love with charity cases (sorry about being un-PC right here) than with the guy that proclaims his love for her. I have heard rumblings (possible spoiler alert) that Marissa and Kevin Volchok will hook up. Another love square in the OC, huh?
Bring back the characters you guys actually know we love! In “The Journey” we’ll have Dawn Atwood back, in “The Undertow” we have the mischievously evil Jess Sathers, in “Exploring Colleges”, looks like our little Mini-Coop Kaitlin will be back, as well as Luke Ward (hopefully with a hair-cut because I can not stand the long hair on “Related”), and way down the road…ANNA!
Seth has even quipped on the show the evitable fate that new characters have on the show, yet they keep bringing them in. I do not trust Matt Ramsey, he’s the male version of Charlotte Morgan, the woman in the beginning of the year that was trying to con our beloved Kiki.
So, please…please, get back to the good story-telling, about the characters that we have stood by, not these new, crappy people we don’t like. Except for Taylor, she rocks! Give her more screen time, and to go to whatever pseudo-college you make up for the gang.
Today is Wednesday February 22, and the Olympics are still on, so I will continue to tell you to catch up with old shows on your DVR. Or check out these suggestions:
8pm Fox “American Idol”
9pm ABC “Lost” (the first two episodes for you 3 people that have never watched it)
10pm Bravo “Project Runway” (reunion special)
11pm Bravo “Project Jay” (they better repeat this because I didn’t have a chance to record it tonight, damn my many concerts)
Sorry for any persons I might pretend is a fan of me...and my mom, but there will be no new posts until Tuesday, in observance of Presidents' Day. Dawn Ostroff is giving “Veronica” an ounce of dignity. I commend you, Dawn!
The recent rating problems plaguing “Veronica” are not our sleuth’s fault. It’s from the hideous “South Beach” airing just before it. Ok, I’m sorry, I haven’t given “South Beach” any credit because who am I to say anything against it when I haven’t given it one minute of my attention. I wanted to, I even recorded some of the episodes, but too many far more important shows needed space on my DVR, and they was quickly deleted before even having me attempt to watch it. The commercials the first fifty times enticed you, like right before “The O.C.” on Fox debuted. The fifty-first to hundred were nauseating and I could not, for the life of me, bring myself to give it any more minutes than I did when I watched the commercials. So, any bad opinions I have are validated by other more renowned (ok, just plain renowned) television critics’ opinions.
Ostroff and the UPN bigwigs are waiting until “America’s Next Top Model” to return to broadcasting as a lead-in for Ms. Mars. Tyra Banks and her “Top Models” have the demographic and better audience that stays past 8:59pm to watch our current version of the Scooby Gang solve this season’s mysteries in Neptune. Finally, someone is showing a little respect to our petite blonde detective and company. Giving “Veronica” a chance with a better lead-in will hopefully solidify “Veronica’s” place at the new network in shape, currently named (and hopefully changing during the summer), The CW.
Current gossip, slyly winked-winked but never confirmed by Ostroff, has pinpointed and commented that The WB’s “Gilmore Girls” and UPN’s “Veronica Mars” will most likely be paired together on The CW’s Tuesday night line-up. Fans, critics, cast and crew of “Veronica” agree the outlook of the pairing would be sensational for both shows and for grabbing the audience and drawing them to The CW.
I will miss brand new episodes of “Veronica Mars” but airing reruns for the newly converted and faithful fans will give the audience more chances to figuring out who killed Felix and who planned the bus crash, or most likely confuse them more and have fans demand “Veronica’s” return. Plus, having the hiatus now will mean less break time later and a lengthier string of brand new episodes airing.
So, buck up, relax and enjoy this break to catch up on “Lost” and any episodes you missed of “Veronica” because, before you know it, the feisty P.I. will be back and you won’t be able to touch that remote.
Olympics are still on, so not much for new programming on a Friday night. I say…
8pm The WB “What I Like About You”, NEW
10pm CBS “Numb3rs”, REPEAT
Catch up on DVR recordings, like last night’s “Smallville”. I heard Lee Thompson Young (“The Famous Jett Jackson”, “South Beach”) was excellent last night as Cyborg and that people are saying since “South Beach” stinks, they would rather have him continue with his own spin-off as this character than have the planned Aquaman spin-off. Let me know what you think.
Some shows are capable of greatness. Some are, well, look on the side of the bus and you can remember why “Emily’s Reasons Why Not” didn’t make it past the first episode. It is not lost on many of us why “Lost” is considered one of the top shows on television. It has the perfect recipe of drama, laughter, suspense and surprises.
Part of the success of the series is the character-driven plots. Yes, yes, we all want to know about the mysteries of the island, what the heck is that monster and why did that plane crash but learning about all the individuals backgrounds before crash-landing on the island is what makes this show superior. The writers of the show have no problem working with the flow of the story rather than making the story work for them.
Majority of shows want you, the viewer, to find everyone likeable. They give you humanity in everyone and tie a nice bow at the end of each episode. “Lost” has no problem having you hate their main characters, in fact, they want you to. In the Sawyer-centric episode titled, “The Long Con”, you discover how despicable Sawyer is. As soon as you started to feel a little sorry for him, he goes right back to his ways. In this particular chapter, he cons everyone around him to get what he wants, this time it is the guns. He manipulates Kate into believing that it was her idea to tell Jack about her feeling that Ana Lucia is trying to get her hands on the guns. He manipulates Locke into believing that Jack is going against their agreement and he needs to relocate the guns. Sawyer also gets Charlie on his side to assist him. He gets Charlie to kidnap and hurt Sun. In one fell swoop, your compassion for Sawyer who had been shot by The Others is now completely gone because he betrayed his own side for his own benefit.
At other times, the writers want us to feel alone and adrift alongside other characters. In “One of Them”, you learn how Sayid became a torturer. You also become aware just how painful it is to lose someone you love and how that loss can change a person or revert him to someone he never wanted to be but had been.
Every archetype of humanity is portrayed on the mysterious island. Each character is intriguing and lends a hand to all the actions that happen on the isle. Learning each back-story helps the viewer understand each individual, their reactions, and their motivations. It connects the viewer to the role and makes watching the program more captivating.
Yes, seeing Eko stand up to the monster was amazing, but so was finding out what Kate did to have a U.S. Marshall track her around the globe. The writers of “Lost” should be proud of themselves for continuing to provide their viewers an excellent show that does not have to answer all the questions in order to keep us riveted. By giving us just a small glimpse of Sun, Charlie, Claire and the Tailies, we will continue to tune in religiously.
Today is Thursday February 16, and the Olympics have diverted regularly schedule programming. I advise you to catch up on old episodes of CSI on Spike and CBS or watch any recorded programs you haven’t had a chance to catch up on. If you are up-to-date, check out some of your favorite television actors in some of their movie roles or, shocker, read a book.
The only brand-new programming on tonight that I would watch is at 8pm on The WB, “Smallville”. “Smallville” is continuing to show other “future” comic heroes interacting with Clark Kent. Tonight introduces Cyborg.
--Most Underused Characters (Part 1)--
I was thinking about this all last night and I ended up with a soliloquy about just one character. Granted, there are several actors that have not been used to their potential, several storylines not stretched out and overlooked to clean up main characters storylines, yada yada.
Let me just say this right now: Please, pretty please, if you are going to give us great characters…USE THEM! It is so frustrating to have wonderful actors and actresses who have been given these great characters with so many possibilities and then they are shoved in a closet only to be pulled out as seat fillers at an award show.
Phew. Ok, now, here’s my rant regarding one particular beloved character that I truly believe has a plethora of happiness and conflict that would be entertaining to watch: LANE KIM (Keiko Ageno), “Gilmore Girls”.
Our first initial Lane impression is that she’s a bright, intelligent girl like her best friend Rory Gilmore, who can keep up with the quick dialogue and pop culture references of both Gilmore ladies. Her mother is an overbearing, controlling, religious zealot who would decree that television and rock music are the devil. Lane was easily overshadowed when Rory and Dean Whitaker started to date. Thankfully, Lane stood up for herself and talked to Rory regarding being ignored. A feisty young woman, she snuck around under her mother’s nose and dated Henry, a fellow Chilton student of Rory and Dave, her own band mate. She hid Sex Pistols and Blondie t-shirts under “I love Jesus” sweaters, conned her mother into hiring her boyfriend to play guitar at Thanksgiving dinner and secretly learned to play the drums.
In the past few seasons Lane has started working at Luke’s Diner, kicked out of her mother’s house, moved in with her male band mates, dated yet another band mate (Zach) and went on tour. At the present time, viewers are only given a glimpse and a small catch-up on what is happening with Lane. In one episode earlier this current season, Lane and Rory met up at Lane’s apartment and discussed that they never see each other and that they need to spend more time together. So far, besides that moment, they have only been seen together for a few fleeting moments at Rory’s 21st birthday party.
After her boyfriend Zach writes too many songs with other girls’ names, their other band mate Brian writes one for Lane, which sparks jealousy in Zach who ruins their showcase in front of an A & R representative. Approximately three episodes later, suddenly Lane is back living with her mom. Uh wha?
As one of the main character’s best friends, we should see her more often. Rory shouldn’t just be coming home on weekends to visit mom, she should be visiting Lane. Does Rory even know Lane and Zach are kaput? If so, well, must have been an off-camera phone call. Rory has been so self-involved with her relationship with Logan, that she has been blind-sighted to the fact that her best friend has been having a roller coaster ride of a year.
In the episode titled, “Just Like Gwen and Gavin”, in about three or four scenes, we see the best range of emotions from Lane. This is the Lane I like to watch. This is the Lane that I have been waiting all season to watch. Actually, more than just this season I’ve wanted to see her. Little tidbits here and there just don’t do the character justice.
In this episode, we see Lane act exactly the complete opposite she has ever wanted to act: like her mother. She’s screaming at customers, bartering furniture prices, throwing people out of the store/house. In a whirling dervish, she erupts in emotion about the break-up with Zach. Yet, she never comes straight out and says it. That is what I am looking for: Pure emotion without the sappy greeting card poetry. Lane has lost her boyfriend, her apartment, her friends, her band mates, her apartment and her freedom. Most likely, she stopped working at Luke’s too, just another way to avoid Zach.
Can you argue that Lane is not worth more air time? Can you fight against me that she doesn’t deserve more respect from the Palladinos? Lane is rock and roll. Lane does not have to partake in heavy drinking, drugs and scandalous behavior to be entertaining to watch. She’s a pure character that deserves more attention. Warner Brothers, ASP has created, yet again, an enticing, well-round character…show us more Lane! I’m not asking for a glimpse of the ever-elusive Mr. Kim. I’m just asking you to show us a character that we have loved and miss. I look forward to more Lane-centric episodes in the future. Thank you.
Hello my little tuberinos!
Today is Valentine's Day and to mark this sap-tastic day, I will make my inaugural post about the TV shows that I love and love on these shows. Before I get to that, let me tell you what this blog will be about. It is about my love of television. I have been wanting to do my own commentary for years. If I could work for TV Guide in Michael Ausiello's new small office, I would. Or stand next to Kristin Vietch of E! on the red carpet, zoom, I'd be there already.
To my friends, I am the TV maven. I know what will be happening next. I know how television shows work their storylines. I keep up-to-date regarding most television shows, even some I don't even watch, just because. I have even been asked to be the television trivia person for the boyfriend of one of my best friends. I don't remember a time, don't remember havin' a life before owning a DVR. How do normal people function without one? Occasionally, I even revolve my social calendar to what important show and episode is airing. I can barely keep my DVR under 75% (normally, it's at 98% full).
So, here I go!
TV Shows, Characters and Storylines I love...NOW!
*Doctor that can check my pulse anytime: Dr. George O'Malley, "Grey's Anatomy" (both Drs. Shepards a close second - Dr. Jack Shepard and Dr. McDreamy)
*Food I hate, but love the chemistry of: Jam - Jim and Pam, "The Office"
*Wouldn't mind being insulted by: Paris Geller, "Gilmore Girls"
*Awesome use of lip-synching and dancing (by a non-popstar): Dr. Christopher Turk, "Scrubs"
*Their kiss is on my lips: Nathan and Haley Scott, "One Tree Hill"
*Looking for love, in all the wrong, right places: Ted Mosby, "How I Met Your Mother"
*Most idiosyncratic guy: Kirk Gleason, "Gilmore Girls" (close second is Dr. John "J.D." Dorian, "Scrubs")
*Schedenfraude: Earl Hickey, "My Name is Earl" (honorable mention would go to the girls and their "unfortunate" neighbors on Wisteria Lane, "Desperate Housewives". Notice how the show always starts off with Mary Alice discussing something bad is about to happen to one of their neighbors, like this past Sunday's slavery episode)
*Show that believes that constant love triangles are never overused: "The O.C."
*Best "FINALLY" kiss: Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes, "Gilmore Girls"
*Incredible usage of favorite stars from defunct shows: "How I Met Your Mother" (Alyson from "Buffy", Jason from "Freaks & Geeks" and Neil from "Doogie Howser, M.D.")
*Awesome creativity, even if it is not always finished: "Project Runway"
*Most beautiful love story: Sun & Jin, "Lost"
*Cutest on-air/off-air couple: Summer Roberts & Seth Cohen/Rachel Bilson & Adam Brody, "The O.C."
*Best place to start taking up karoake so I can bump into some awesome artists singing create covers: Java The Hut, "Veronica Mars (lead singers from both Dandy Warhols and Spoon have been there)
*Show I MUST watch as it is originally airing: "Gilmore Girls"
*Stuck on an island, any island, cast: "Lost"
*Suit-up!: Barney Stinson, "How I Met Your Mother"
*Mother-daughter: Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, "Gilmore Girls"
*Cutest boy from MA on TV: John Krasinski, "The Office"
*Greatest usage of a MA TV personality on the cover of a Boston magazine: Ellen Pompeo, "Grey's Anatomy" (I would've said John Krasinkski again here, but Ellen was dressed up like a doctor for an issue regarding doctors and hospitals in the area, so I gotta give her kudos for that)
*Best game/introduction: "Have you met Ted?", "How I Met Your Mother"
*Best usage of the word "love": LoVe - Logan Echolls and Veronica Mars' relationship moniker, "Veronica Mars"
That's all I have time for today. Hope you enjoy this first entry and look forward to plenty more.
Today is Tuesday February 14th, so tonight you should be watching...
8pm The WB "Gilmore Girls"
9pm The WB "Supernatural" or catch up on your DVR recordings (which is what I'll be doing)
10pm Bravo "Queer Eye" which I'll record and finish catchin' up on last week's shows, or maybe I should sleep and not be sick any more, hmm...decisions.
Don't forget that today "Grey's Anatomy", Season 1 is on sale. Cheapest I found it for, $16.99 at Best Buy and that's without rebates, like FYE has. But, standard pricing is $19.99.
---Next time: Underused Characters---
